Dear Evan Hanson

The Olivier, Tony and Grammy award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen has made its much-anticipated debut at Milton Keynes Theatre this week, and it’s nothing short of spectacular. This emotionally charged production delivers a powerful and complex story that resonates deeply, leaving audiences both moved and reflective.

At its heart is Evan Hansen, a socially awkward and troubled teenager, played with absolute conviction by the brilliant Ryan Kopel. His portrayal is raw and heartfelt, making Evan’s journey—caught between an elaborate lie and the unexpected connections it fosters—utterly compelling. The story skilfully explores themes of mental health, grief, and the human need for belonging, peeling back the layers of each character to reveal their vulnerabilities and flaws. Notably, Alice Fearn as Heidi Hansen gives a show-stopping performance, delivering a poignant, heart-rending song about her struggles as a single mother.

The music by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul is exceptional, with numbers like Waving Through a Window and You Will Be Found serving as emotional high points. Each song is beautifully integrated into the narrative, amplifying the show’s impact. The staging and production design are equally impressive, with seamless scene changes and stunning lighting that enhances the storytelling without distracting from it.

A unique element of this production is its collaboration with TikTok, which allowed aspiring performers to audition by submitting videos of themselves singing songs from the show. Out of over 2,000 submissions, 36 participants were invited to in-person auditions, leading to Sonny Monaghan being cast in the ensemble and as alternate Evan Hansen, performing the role twice a week at matinees.

Monaghan joins a stellar cast, including Lauren Conroy as Zoe Murphy, Helen Anker as Cynthia Murphy, Richard Hurst as Larry Murphy, Killian Thomas Lefevre as Connor Murphy, Tom Dickerson as Jared Kleinman, and Vivian Panka as Alana Beck. The ensemble features Lara Beth-Sas, Will Forgrave, Daniel Forrester, Jessica Lim, and Olivia-Faith Kamau, bringing depth and energy to this groundbreaking production.

This is a richly deserving, multi-award-winning production that brings its audience on a rollercoaster of emotions, challenging perspectives and leaving a lasting impression. Whether you're a seasoned theatre fan or new to musicals, this is one show you won’t want to miss.

Dear Evan Hansen runs at Milton Keynes Theatre until Saturday, 1st February—grab your tickets now.
